The following position description is for a standard Texas Hold'em game with ten players. This guide is still useful for smaller games, just be sure to seperate the table into early, middle and late positions.
Dealer
This player deals the cards and has the best position at the table. The dealer can observe how the other playings are betting and has the final bet after all the players have bet. A player who takes full advantage of this postion can affect the game by raising the pot and raising the stakes.
Blinds
The person on the dealer's left is the small blind and the first one to bet. The small blind is also the first player to act after the flop. The person to the left of the small blind is the big blind.
Early Position
Early position refers to the first three players to act after the blinds. In order to make the most out of this position these players should only play strong hands. These players do not have the benefit of seeing what the other players are going to bet or raise so they must be very selective in the hands they play.
Middle Position
Middle position refers to the next three players after the three early position players. These players can afford to play strong hands as well as some weaker hands because they can see more of the table.
Late Position
Late position refers to the last player before the dealer and also the dealer. These players have the ability to play the greatest number of hands because they can see all of the table action.
